Gillion Avenue
Challenge
Transforming the this residence pool vision into reality came with significant hurdles. Mid-construction, the client decided to adjust the pool’s elevation, opting for three steps from the upper patio to the pool deck instead of four. This required raising the pool by six inches after excavation, a complex task given the existing piers. Achieving structural integrity while making these changes demanded input from an engineer to reinforce the thickened pool floor and extend the piers accordingly.
Additionally, the pool's all-mosaic tile design necessitated a level of precision rare outside of Olympic lap pools. The shotcrete work had to ensure perfectly plumb and square walls, accurate to within 1/8". Coordination with multiple stakeholders—including the builder, landscape architect, and interior designer—added another layer of complexity, as the entire space needed to integrate seamlessly with the pavilion and surrounding landscape.
This pool project stands out as a masterpiece of craftsmanship and teamwork. Though our focus was solely on the pool, the intricate design and engineering challenges made this one of our most rewarding endeavors to date.
Solution
To address the elevation change, we partnered with an engineer to extend the pool’s piers and reinforce its thickened floor. These adjustments maintained the structural stability essential for a lasting, high-quality pool.
For the mosaic tile finish, we collaborated with Ray Corral, a renowned mosaicist, and implemented advanced shotcrete techniques to meet exacting standards. The team approached the project with the precision of constructing an Olympic lap pool, ensuring flawless alignment and durability for the mosaic surface.
Coordination was key to the success of this project. By working closely with the builder, we ensured the pavilion's finished floor aligned perfectly with the new pool elevation. Input from the landscape architect and interior designer ensured the pool design harmonized with the overall aesthetic of the property.
The final product is more than a pool—it’s a breathtaking work of art. With its meticulous craftsmanship and seamless integration into the residence's architecture and landscape, the pool serves as a functional centerpiece that perfectly reflects the client’s vision.
